Mix sugar, water, yeast, salt and 1 cup of flour in mixing bowl. Mix well. Let it rest for several min. to let yeast go to work, preferably covered. Add butter and egg. Mix. Begin adding balance of flour until it’s nice and elastic and doesn’t stick to your hands or bowl. Cover and let rise until doubled in size. Punch down well and knead until no air is in dough. Form balls of dough (to your desired shape) to make individual rolls. Weigh each roll to get them uniform in size. Place in greased pans. Let rise for an hour. Bake at 350ºF for approx. 20 min., depending on roll size. Remove from pan immediately and baste with softened butter.
This recipe doubles well.
Yield: 12-18 rolls, depending on size.
