Oklahoma wheat harvest continues with producers making great strides despite fighting mud in several locations across central and northern Oklahoma. Test weights across the state have dropped due to the heavy rains last week, but the statewide average is still 59 pounds per bushel, despite some lower test weights reported based on location and variety. Yields across the state are being reported from the mid-30s to mid-50s for the most part. Producers with intensive management plans have been reporting yields in the mid-60s to low-80s. Protein across the state is averaging 11.1%. Due to several locations making great progress in parts of southwest, central and north-central Oklahoma, the OWC is calling harvest 37% completed at the time of this report. The next OWC harvest report will be published on Wednesday, June 25.
Southwest and western Oklahoma
Walters / Temple / Ahpeatone / Ryan / Hulen
Harvest has made great progress in this region over the past five days. Despite lower test weights due to rain last week, these locations are averaging 58 to 59 pounds per bushel. Yields are ranging from 20 to 40 bushels per acre, with some higher yields noted on earlier cuttings. Protein is averaging 11.9%. It should be noted this region will take in one-third less than the five-year average due to excessive flooding on wheat that will never be harvested. This region is 90% harvested.
Carter / Brinkman / Altus / Lone Wolf
Test weights have dropped some, but this region is still averaging 59 pounds per bushel. Yields are being reported in the mid-30s to mid-40s, with some intensively managed wheat making in the low-50s to mid-60s. Protein averages are 11.2%. These regions are 95% harvested.
Hobart
This area has not moved along as quickly due to heavier rains earlier in the season. Test weights are averaging 59 pounds per bushel. Yields range from the mid-30s to mid-50s, with some intensively managed wheat making in the high-70s to low-80s. Protein is averaging 11.2%. Several reports from producers show good wheat in this region if they can get into the fields. This region is 70% harvested.
Gotebo
This area has also experienced delays due to earlier heavy rains. Test weights average 58 pounds per bushel. Yields range from the mid-30s to mid-50s. Protein averages are 11.2%. This region is 40% harvested.
Sentinel / Rocky
Producers have made great progress. Test weights average 59 pounds per bushel. Early yields were in the mid-30s to mid-40s on heavily grazed wheat. As harvest has progressed, yields have improved to the mid-40s and low-50s. Protein averages are 11.8%. The Sentinel region is 95% harvested; the Rocky region, which received more rain, is 70% completed.
Central Oklahoma
Greenfield
Harvest in this region made great progress on sandier ground over the weekend. Test weights range from 58.5 to 62 pounds per bushel depending on variety and location. Yields are being reported from the mid-40s to mid-60s, with some higher yields on intensively managed wheat. Protein ranges are from 10.7% to 11.1%. This area is 50% harvested.
Okarche / Piedmont
Producers made progress over the weekend despite mud slowing them down. Test weights now average 59 pounds per bushel. Yields are in the mid-40s, with intensively managed wheat reaching the mid-50s to low-60s. Protein varies, with some areas east of Okarche into Piedmont reporting above 12%. This region is 50% harvested.
Kingfisher / Omega / Loyal / Reeding
Some lower test weights are now being reported, but the region is still averaging 58 to 59 pounds per bushel. Yields range from the mid-30s to mid-50s depending on management. Grazing has impacted yield in several fields, but producers with management-intensive plans are seeing yields in the mid-50s to mid-60s. Protein ranges are from 10.5% to 11.2%. Kingfisher is 50% harvested, Omega is 35%, and Loyal and Reeding are each 30% harvested.
North Central and northern Oklahoma
McWillie / Helena / Goltry
Producers made strong progress in the past five to six days. Test weights are averaging 60 pounds per bushel. Yields range from the high-30s to mid-50s, with some intensively managed fields making in the mid-60s. No protein data was reported. This region is 50% harvested.
Kremlin / Hunter / Pond Creek
Producers just got good starts over the weekend and are contending with mud. Test weights are holding up well at 58 to 61 pounds per bushel. Yields range from the mid-40s to mid-50s, with some intensively managed fields in the mid-60s. Protein averages are 11.2%. This region is 20% harvested.
Tonkawa / Ponca City / Blackwell / Braman
This region is just getting started. Test weights are reported at 58 to 59 pounds per bushel — better than expected given the heavy rainfall. Early yields range from the low-40s to mid-50s. Flooding and hail have caused damage, and several fields may be abandoned due to weed issues. Protein on early cuttings averages 11.1%. This region is 8% harvested.
Northwest Oklahoma
Shattuck / Camargo
Producers made strong progress over the past five days. Yields range from the low-30s to mid-40s, impacted by heavy grazing. Test weights are 60 pounds per bushel or higher. Protein averages are 11.1%. This region is 60% harvested.
Burlington
Producers made significant progress. Yields range from the mid-50s to mid-60s, with some intensively managed fields reaching the mid-80s. Test weights average 60 or above. Protein is 11.1%. This region is 60% harvested.
Northeast Oklahoma
Afton / Miami
Producers are just getting into fields, hampered by rain and mud. Two wheat classes reported:
- Hard Red Winter: Test weights averaging 55 pounds per bushel. Yields range from mid-20s to mid-50s depending on variety and location.
- Soft Red Winter: Test weights averaging 56 to 58 pounds per bushel. Yields also range from mid-20s to mid-50s. This region is 5% harvested.
